Behind the Scenes of Chios' Rouketopolemos

This is a tradition that is said to have originated as far back as the Ottoman occupation of the Greek lands. This tradition has made the town of Vrontados on the island of Chios a popular tourist attraction during Orthodox Easter.

Two perishes only 400 meters apart are the rivals. Each perish makes thousands of homemade rockets out of long wooden sticks and a gunpowder mixture with the goal to hit each rivals bell tower right when the priests start to chant "Xristos Anesti" or "Christ is Risen".

Neither parish ever wins because they both claim victory and leave it
